Created to celebrate Jakarta’s 499th anniversary, this installation explores the visual identity of Jakarta through a contemporary interpretation of Betawi culture, architecture, and the city’s natural character.
The design takes inspiration from the traditional Betawi house, incorporating recognizable architectural elements such as Betawi windows, decorative details, and Gigi Balang—the distinctive triangular ornament commonly found along the roof edges of traditional Betawi buildings. These elements are reinterpreted as decorative components within the installation, transforming traditional architectural language into a playful and contemporary visual experience.
The installation also incorporates floral and botanical elements associated with Jakarta, creating a connection between the city’s cultural heritage and its natural environment. These motifs are stylized into colorful decorative forms, giving the installation a lively and celebratory character.
A vibrant and colorful palette was deliberately used to reflect the festive spirit of Jakarta’s anniversary. Bold colors, layered patterns, and illuminated elements create a dynamic visual composition while maintaining references to the warmth and richness of Betawi culture.
Rather than reproducing traditional architecture literally, the installation translates its forms, ornaments, colors, and cultural references into a contemporary visual language—creating a celebration of Jakarta that feels both rooted in heritage and relevant to the modern city.
