For the Teh Sosro design competition, I decided to delve into Indonesia’s snack culture and chose the theme: “I Love Market Snacks.”
Indonesian cuisine serves as a vivid reflection of our culture, easily introduced through its taste, appearance, and ingredients. It encapsulates traditions, customs, and various events. Market snacks exemplify this diversity within Indonesian culinary delights. They encompass a wide range of snacks crafted from ingredients sourced from our archipelago, boasting a vibrant spectrum of colors that mirror our festive and joyous national spirit. Moreover, their fusion of cultural influences has elevated market snacks to an iconic status in Indonesian cuisine. Lemper, pukis, layer cakes, talam, and kueh ape data can be found in every nook and cranny of markets across Indonesia.

Take, for instance, putu cakes, made from rice flour and adorned with pandan-colored layers, filled with palm sugar and grated coconut. This snack embodies quintessential Indonesian flavors, with its ingredients deeply rooted in our culinary heritage. Traditional iconic snacks like Kueh Ku and Talam, influenced by Chinese culture, have become staples in celebrations, gratitude ceremonies, and social gatherings. And let’s not forget rissoles and croquettes, snacks infused with Western influences, readily available throughout Indonesia.
Personally, I have a fondness for market snacks. What about you? Which market snack holds a special place in your heart?
