Theme: Jakarta’s Flora & Fauna
The Betawi Batik is characterized by the distinctive tumpal style, showcasing vibrant hues reminiscent of Jakarta’s lively atmosphere. Its patterns feature the beloved avian resident of Jakarta, the Burung Kipasan Belang (Rhipidura javanica), commonly spotted around mangroves. This bird boasts brown plumage with a striking straight white tail feather. Complementing this avian motif are depictions of Jakarta’s native flora, including the Bunga Tapak Dara (Catharanthus roseus), known for its five-petaled blooms in shades of pink and white, often seen gracing the neighborhoods of Jakarta. Additionally, the batik incorporates the bunga nona makan sirih (Clerodendrum thomsoniae), another botanical presence in Jakarta’s residential areas.
The design pays homage to Betawi’s cultural heritage through emblematic elements like Gigi Balang, geometric patterns reminiscent of teeth often adorning traditional Betawi homes. It also features Kembang Kelapa, an iconic representation inspired by the coconut flower, frequently utilized in cultural adornments for homes, festivities, parades, and weddings. This fusion of natural and cultural motifs creates a tapestry that celebrates the rich tapestry of Jakarta’s identity.
